Indu’s 18-year-old son, Vilas, died in 2008 after falling off a moving train in Andheri. She then filed an appeal for compensation with the railway tribunal. Around the same time, she applied for voter ID and Aadhaar cards, which she thought she might need as part of the legal process.

The case went on for over four years before the tribunal ruled in 2013 that she should be given compensation of Rs 4 lakh. Indu’s lawyer, Bhavar Shukla, said that authorities refused to sanction the money as the name mentioned in Indu’s affidavit didn’t match with that on her identity cards.
