Secure Your Journey: Aadhaar Authentication Now Mandatory for Tatkal Train Tickets

Aadhaar Mandatory for Tatkal Tickets: New IRCTC Rules from July 2025
Indian Railways is rolling out significant changes to its popular Tatkal ticket booking system, with Aadhaar authentication becoming mandatory from July 1, 2025. This crucial update aims to enhance transparency, curb misuse, and ensure that genuine passengers have a fairer chance at securing last-minute train tickets.
What’s Changing and When?
The new rules introduce a two-phased approach to Aadhaar integration for Tatkal bookings:
- From July 1, 2025:
- Only Aadhaar-authenticated users will be able to book Tatkal train tickets through the IRCTC official website and mobile app. This means your IRCTC account must be linked and verified with your Aadhaar number.
- From July 15, 2025:
- An additional layer of security will be added. All Tatkal bookings, whether online via the IRCTC website/app or offline at computerized Passenger Reservation System (PRS) counters and authorized agents, will require Aadhaar-based OTP (One-Time Password) authentication. The OTP will be sent to the mobile number registered with your Aadhaar.
Why the Change? Benefits for Genuine Passengers
These changes are a direct response to long-standing issues of touts and unauthorized agents misusing the Tatkal system, often leading to genuine passengers missing out on urgent travel plans. The Aadhaar mandate is expected to bring several benefits:
- Fairer Access: By linking bookings to a verified identity, it becomes significantly harder for bots and unscrupulous agents to hoard tickets, ensuring more availability for those who truly need them.
- Reduced Misuse & Fraud: Aadhaar authentication adds a robust security layer, deterring fraudulent bookings and illicit reselling of tickets.
- Enhanced Transparency: The system becomes more accountable, with each booking directly traceable to an authenticated individual.
- Streamlined Verification: For those who link their Aadhaar beforehand, the booking process can be smoother as passenger details may be pre-filled and verified.
How to Prepare: Link Your Aadhaar with IRCTC Now!
To avoid any last-minute inconvenience and ensure a smooth Tatkal booking experience, it is highly recommended to link your Aadhaar with your IRCTC account well in advance. Here’s a general guide:
- Log In to IRCTC: Visit the official IRCTC website (www.irctc.co.in) or open the IRCTC Rail Connect Mobile App and log in using your credentials.
- Navigate to “My Account”: Look for the “My Account” section in the menu.
- Select “Authenticate User”: Within “My Account,” find and click on the “Authenticate User” link.
- Enter Aadhaar Details: You will be prompted to enter your 12-digit Aadhaar number or Virtual ID. Ensure your name matches exactly as it appears on your Aadhaar card.
- Verify with OTP: An OTP will be sent to the mobile number linked with your Aadhaar. Enter this OTP on the IRCTC platform to complete the authentication.
- Confirmation: Upon successful authentication, a confirmation message will be displayed.
Important Tip: Also ensure that the mobile number registered with your Aadhaar is current and accessible, as this will be crucial for receiving OTPs during the booking process from July 15.
What About Agents?
To further level the playing field, Indian Railways has also imposed restrictions on authorized ticketing agents. From July 1, 2025, agents will not be allowed to book opening-day Tatkal tickets during the first 30 minutes of the booking window. This restriction applies from 10:00 AM to 10:30 AM for AC classes and from 11:00 AM to 11:30 AM for non-AC classes.
A Step Towards Digital India and Seamless Travel
These Aadhaar-linked reforms underscore Indian Railways‘ commitment to leveraging digital solutions for improved public services. While the initial adaptation might require a few extra steps for passengers, the long-term benefits of a more secure, fair, and transparent Tatkal booking system will undoubtedly enhance the travel experience for millions across the country. Prepare yourself by linking your Aadhaar today and look forward to a more equitable railway journey.
