Such massive cleanliness drive has resulted in realization of fine amounting to   Rs. 5,13,700 /- against 5066 penalty cases for spitting/littering in Railway premises in ER jurisdiction during January, 2015, while Rs. 95400 /- was earned as fine  during January, 2014 against 879 penalty cases for spitting/littering, thus registering an increase  in penalty earning from such offenders by 438 % in January this year in comparison to that of in January last year.

It may be mentioned here that littering/spitting is strictly prohibited in trains/ platforms / railway premises for which penalties will be imposed upto Rs.500/-. However, contravention of these rules i.e. prohibition of activities affecting cleanliness and hygiene in the Railway premises under Railway Act 1989 and Indian Railways Rules -2012 will attract penalty.

Eastern Railway also has undertaken a mass awareness campaign for maintaining cleanliness in railway premises and appeals to all passengers/rail users to co-operate in Railways’ drive to keep trains/platforms/station premises neat and clean.
